Monmouth Beach Bans Use Of Disposable Plastics In Most Businesses
Board of Commissioners adopted the ordinance on May 22

MONMOUTH BEACH, NJ - As of June 1, plastics will be a dirty word in Monmouth Beach.
Plastic bags, polystyrene foam containers and plastic straws will soon be a thing of the past for businesses and restaurants.
The three member Board of Commissioners recently adopted an ordinance that forbids the use of most kinds of disposable plastics as of June 1.

"No business or store shall provide any single use of plastic carryout bags, polystyrene foam containers or plastic straws," the ordinance states.
The businesses listed include pharmacies, supermarkets, grocery stores, clothing stores, food service establishments, surf shops, food markets, and dry cleaners, according to the ordinance.

There is one exception to the forbidden items - bait stores will be allowed to use plastic bags.
Clean Ocean Action's executive director, Cindy Zipf, who attended the meeting, said she was hopeful the Monmouth Beach could serve as a model for other communities, according to nj.com.
