'Armed And Dangerous' AWOL Naval Member Found With Loaded Handgun: Cops

Police received alert the 24-year-old was at a private Califon residence Wednesday morning.

CALIFON, N.J. – Washington Township police arrested an AWOL member of the Navy Wednesday morning after receiving reports the man was armed and dangerous, Lt. Doug Compton said.

The police department received a request from the Naval Criminal Investigation Services to attempt to locate Christian Bergstrom, 24, of Norfolk, Virginia, who was believed to be in the Califon area, Compton said. As part of its routine patrol, Washington Township police cover the borough of Califon.

Information received by the police department showed Bergstrom was at a private residence in Califon and should be considered armed and dangerous, Compton said, after the man allegedly made threats through social media.

Police arrived at the residence and found Bergstrom, who was taken into custody without incident. Police then found a loaded handgun in Bergstrom’s vehicle just a few feet away from where he was arrested, Compton said.

Bergstrom was turned over to agents with the Naval Criminal Investigation Services who arrived on scene, and was then transported to a Navy Absentee Collection Center, Compton said.

Bergstrom's LinkedIn account has him listed as a fireman in the United States Navy.
