Checkmate: Long Valley Students Medal In County Chess Tournament

Two dozen Washington Twp. competitors take part in consortium for gifted program.

LONG VALLEY, N.J. – Move over, Bobby Fischer. There’s a group of Long Valley students ready to take your place in the history books.

On Tuesday, Feb. 2, students from Washington Township schools traveled to Jefferson Township to compete in the a chess tournament hosted by the NJ Consortium for Gifted Programs.

What came of it? Five medal winners from Long Valley.

They were:

  • Owen Wormann
  • Connor Daly
  • Baylor Tumminelli
  • Ryan Taylor
  • Adam Han

A total of 24 students from Washington Township took part in the tournament.

β€œStudents gained opportunities to develop good sportsmanship, to face challenges and setbacks with perseverance, to learn strategies for game development from other students, and to adjust their game based on their own mistakes,” said District Talented and Gifted teacher Lynne Henwood. β€œOur young chess players left the tournament with smiles and gratitude, and were wonderful representatives of the Washington Township School District.”
