Fire Hazards Elevated Across Most Of N.J. Friday

Dry air and low humidity combining for potentially dangerous afternoon, National Weather Service says.

Drier air and a drop in humidity has elevated fire hazards across most of New Jersey Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

In an alert issued after 10 a.m., the service said nearly the entire state was under an elevated risk for the spread of fires Friday afternoon.

“Drier air is moving into the area behind a cold front that passed off the coast this morning,” the statement said. “Relative humidity values are expected to drop to between 30 and 40 percent this afternoon with northwest wind gusts in the 15 to 25 MPH range. The combination of low relative humidity … gusty winds and dry fuels will produce an elevated risk for the spread of fires this afternoon across interior New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.”
