Long Valley Named Safest Town In New Jersey

Data from 2014 shows Washington Township's crime rate is incredibly low.

LONG VALLEY, N.J. – We’re number 1! We’re number 1!

That’s right, Washington Township residents: your town has been named the safest city with a population of more than 10,000 residents in all of New Jersey.

A report released this week by creditdonkey.com, which analyzed the Uniform Crime Report data for 2014 (the last full year statistics were available) for the 50 safest towns in the Garden State put Washington Township at number one.

The study broke the scoring down into four categories:

  • Violent crime per 1,000 residents
  • Robbery per 1,000 residents
  • Property crime per 1,000 residents
  • Burglary per 1,000 residents

The website then formulated a scoring method combining the categories. The lower the score, the higher the ranking. Washington Township was the only town to score below 1.0, with a total of 0.586. Westwood came in second overall, with a score of 1.146.

The website also explained that not all towns submit the crime data to the FBI, which is self-reported by each municipality. Morris County scored well in the top-50, with eight towns ranked. Chatham Township joined Washington Township in the top-10.
