New Eagle Scout Honored By Long Valley Mayor

Evan Garner's Eagle Scout project involved creating and designing a new sign for a local church.

LONG VALLEY, NJ — A Boy Scout from Washington Township achieved scouting's highest honor recently, and Mayor Matt Murello honored him for his service at a recent ceremony.

Washington Township officials presented a formal proclamation to Evan Garner, welcoming him into the rank of Eagle Scout. Garner is a member of Long Valley Troop 36, Murello said.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank or achievement in the Boy Scouts of America's Scouts BSA program. Since its inception in 1911, approximately four percent of Scouts have earned this rank after a rigorous review process, officials said.

To receive the rank, Scouts must plan, develop, and lead others in a service project that benefits any religious institution, school, or part of the local community.

Garner's Eagle Scout project involved replacing the signs at the Long Valley Presbyterian Church. In order to complete his project, Garner was in charge of designing, creating and installing the new sign. Long Valley Troop 36 also said that Garner also moved the food pantry sign to a new location on the property.

Long Valley Presbyterian Church is located at 39 Bartley Road, in Long Valley.

Garner worked with a local artist, the church parishioners and his fellow scouts to complete the community project.

Long Valley Troop 36 was established on December 2, 1937, with 13 newly minted Scouts and seven troop leaders. In the last 83 years, many Scouts have passed through this troop, producing more than 95 Eagle Scouts in the process.
