Seat Belt Crackdown Coming to Washington Twp.

Police granted $5,000 for extra patrols during two-week 'Click It Or Ticket' campaign.

LONG VALLEY, N.J. – Extra police patrols will be seen around Washington Township during a two-week period from May 23 to June 5, as the annual Click It Or Ticket campaign is enforced.

Washington Township Police have been granted $5,000 to add 100 patrol hours to the roads for the national campaign.

β€œUsing a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. β€œIn 2013, 21,000 people in the United States were killed in traffic crashes, and almost half of them were unrestrained.”

During last year’s campaign, 372 New Jersey police departments participated in the two-week initiative, and as a result issued 26,308 seat belt citations, 4,969 speeding summonses, and made 833 impaired driving arrests.
