Washington Twp Police Lieutenant Retires After 25 Years
After a lengthy law enforcement career, Lt. Douglas Compton will begin work as a professor at Centenary University.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — On Wednesday, Washington Township Police Department employees gathered along with friends and family to celebrate the retirement of a 25-year veteran of the department.
Now-retired Lieutenant Douglas Compton, badge number 26, began working for the department in 1994 after graduating from Morris County Police Academy’s 44th Basic Class.
After starting as a patrolman, Compton was assigned to work in community policing, the detective bureau and as a field training officer, the department said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

In 2002, Compton was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, and he was assigned to patrol. His work as a sergeant included serving as a supervisor in community policing and traffic.
The department said Compton was promoted to Lieutenant in 2012. From there, he oversaw the patrol, support services and administrative divisions.

Compton holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, a master's in leadership and public administration and a doctorate in educational leadership.
Moving forward, Compton is set to teach as a professor at Centenary University.
