3 Madison Elementary Students Among NJ Young Playwrights Contest Winners

The Playwrights Theatre named its 32nd Annual New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest winners.

Three Madison elementary school students were among the winners for the Playwrights Theatre’s 32nd Annual New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest.

Artha Abeysinghe, for “Sibling Rivalry” and Josephine Walker, for “Stitches - Dun, Dun, Dun”, both of Torey J. Sabatini Elementary School, and Francesca Wan for “Storm in a Cup”, of the St. Vincent Martyr School, were the winners in the Elementery School Division, including grades four through six, according to a report from BroadwayWorld.com.

In total, 345 plays were submitted by young playwrights throughout New Jersey in elementary, junior high school and high school divisions, the reports said.

The selections in each category were made without knowledge of playwrights’ schools, grade or background, according to the report. The 32nd Annual New Jersey Young Playwrights Contest Festival will take place on June 1 and 2 at the Barn Theatre on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The elementary school plays will be presented on Monday, June 1 at 7 p.m. and the high school plays on Tuesday, June 2 at 7 p.m. Admission to the readings is free, but reservations are required, as seating is limited.
