After Leaving For 'Dawson's Creek' Gig, Actor Returns To NJ University
James Van Der Beek will address graduates at the Morris County university which he dropped out of to take the lead role in the teen drama.

MADISON, NJ — Among the commencement speakers for Drew University this year is a well-know former student, who dropped out in the 1990s to take the main role in a teen drama.
"Dawson's Creek" star James Van Der Beek studied English and sociology at Drew on an academic scholarship beginning in 1995, the university said. He was also a member of the a cappella group 36 Madison Avenue before leaving school to take on the role of Dawson Leary.
The show, also starring Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams, ran from 1998 to 2003 and followed the characters from high school into college.
