Madison is not alone in having difficulty filling these positions; a growing number of municipalities throughout New Jersey are facing a shortage of school crossing guards.
"I've heard recently, in a couple of the last few years, there are more communities having more trouble" finding people to fill these positions, said Catherine Bull, Coordinator of New Jersey's Crossing Guard Training and Resources Program.
Mayor Conley previously lauded the crossing guards' efforts and expressed gratitude for what they do to ensure that the borough's school-age students arrive and depart the school grounds safely.
