According to New Jersey Hills, the Congressional Gold Medal for Service has four main areas of focus:

  • Personal development and leadership
  • Physical fitness
  • Expedition and exploration
  • Community service

His battle to overcome cancer and his work as a Madison volunteer firefighter are just two of his qualifying characteristics for the award.
