Madison FD Knocks Down Fire at Chef Loryn's

Captain says aggressive interior attack helped contain fire to single business in building at 250 Main St.

A fire that broke out at Chef Loryn's late Saturday afternoon is under control and the cause is still under investigation.

"We received a call that something was burning from a next door unit," Madison Fire Captain Ed Nunn said.

Nunn, who was incident command for fire units on scene, said when the department arrived there was smoke coming from the roof. Upon entrance there was thick smoke and fire.

"It was a quick and aggressive interior attack," Nunn said of how the fire was knocked down.

Police shut down the part of Main Street running past the restaurant, located in a building at 250 Main St. There were no injuries caused by the fire.

Firefighters ripped down walls in the business to make sure the fire was contained. Nunn said there was no extension into adjacent businesses in the building. He also said that preliminarily it didn't look suspicious in nature, though an investigation still needed to be done to determine the cause. Chief Lou DeRosa, who was not on the scene but was on his way back from a trip south, will be a part of the investigating group.

Sgt. Steve Carpenter was incident command for the Madison Police department and secured the scene, which was contained by police tape. Borough Council President Jeannie Tsukamoto, who is the public safety liaison, also responded to the scene.

"They are very quick to respond and highly trained," Tsukamoto said of the borough's fire department. "In a situation like this, they can put a fire out very quickly."

Madison received mutual aid from Cedar Knolls, Florham Park, and Morris Township. A unit from Chatham was covering for the borough while the department was on the scene.
