Madison Townwide Garage Sale Planned

Participants in April 20 event asked to donate portion of proceeds to send children affected by Superstorm Sandy to summer camp.

A Madison townwide garage sale is planned for Saturday, April 20, and some of the money residents earn that day could help send children affected by Superstorm Sandy to summer camp.

Madison has partnered with Union Beach to help the shore town recover after the storm, and the borough is asking residents who host garage sales to donate a percentage of their proceeds to send children from Union Beach to camp.

Over 50 families from Union Beach have expressed interest in having their kids attend, and three YMCA camps in the area are offering a discounted rate of $650 for them, according to a borough announcement about the event.

"A week of summer camp will provide some of these children with a week away to enjoy some fun, and get a break from the ongoing sense of loss and disruption to their lives," the announcement says.

Residents can register their garage sales to have it listed on an interactive map.

Flag exchange

Union Beach Mayor Paul J. Smith Jr. and Councilman Charles Cocuzza attended Monday's Borough Council meeting. Smith gave Madison Mayor Bob Conley a Union Beach flag and Conley gave Smith a Rose City flag.

Conley also presented a $906 ceremonial check from a fundraiser by fifth-graders at Torey J. Sabatini School.

Conley mentioned other upcoming fundraisers: a book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Madison Community House, and the Rotary Club's family festival to be held on the Realogy property, 175 Park Ave., on June 15 and June 16.

Smith and Cocuzza thanked Madison.

"The whole town was devastated," Cocuzza said. "We're coming back one day at a time and to have friends such as all of you makes it that much easier and makes it more hopeful for the future. Things are going to get better. Things are going to turn around. We are better today than we were yesterday and we'll be better tomorrow than we are today. You all are playing a very big part of that we want to thank all of you very much."
