Photos: Madison Digs in for 15th May Day

Hundreds of volunteers raked, weeded and spread mulch to make Madison brighter Saturday.

More than 900 volunteers worked to beautify Madison during the 15th Annual May Day.

Much of the work involved spreading mulch ground from trees felled during the October snowstorm.

Girl Scouts, students, business owners, elected officials, members of borough clubs and organizations, and borough administration and employees were among those helping.

Kristyn Fabyanski and her husband, Mark, moved to Madison 10 months ago. Kristyn Fabyanski was so excited for the community event she wouldn't let a broken shoulder keep her from participating. They could be seen hauling garbage cans full of mulch near the train station around 8 a.m. Saturday.

Barbara Carey of the Garden Club of Madison said it's important for Madison to keep places like Rose Garden Park, which the club tends to, looking nice.

"You walk by here and see parents and their children having picnics," she said.

Girl Scout Nicole Johnson worked with members of her troop and said she was happy they were able to make Madison brighter.

Resident Joe Balwierczak said it was his second year helping during May Day.

"I'm just happy to help out the town a little bit," he said. "It gives everybody a feeling that they own something."
