Police: Ice Causes Medical Emergencies, Car Crashes In Madison

Madison Police responded to dozens of emergencies caused by severe weather this morning. Residents are urged to stay inside.

Madison Police are urging residents to stay inside today, as freezing rain has disabled dozens of vehicles, and caused crashes and medical emergencies throughout town.

The Madison Police Department issued a severe weather warning this morning, as icy conditions are causing hazards on both the streets and sidewalks.

“Roads are extremely icy, a rep from the Madison Police Department stated in a weather warning. “Do not drive if at all possible until roads are treated.”

Madison Police responded to six medical emergencies, four motor vehicle crashes and dozens of disabled vehicles due to the weather. These accidents all occurred within just two hours this morning, Madison Police stated on Facebook Sunday morning.

Police added that while the main roadways in town are improving, residents should continue to exercise caution until the DPW can address the situation.

The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory, saying freezing rain will lead to ice accumulations.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain soaked Madison on Sunday morning, and will return on Sunday night and Monday morning.

NJ Transit bus service in north Jersey is not operating at this time due to icy road conditions.

NJ Transit has instituted a systemwide cross-honoring of rail, light rail and bus passes/tickets today due to the extreme weather conditions, the City reports. In addition, the speed for the entire length of the NJ Turnpike has been restricted to 35 mph.

There were 231 accidents and 103 “aids” reported by New Jersey State Police between midnight and 10 a.m.
