'Mechanical Problem' Shuts Municipal Pool on Super Hot Day

Officials say crews are working to fix the problem, and the pool will be reopened Wednesday.

With temperatures topping out at over 90 degrees Tuesday, township officials said it was not the best day of the year for a “mechanical problem” to temporarily shut down the municipal pool.

However, that’s exactly what happened at about 10 a.m. Tuesday when officials announced an “unforeseen” issue that forced Mahwah to shut down the public pool for the day.

According to Mayor Bill Laforet, the problem was caused by a water supply line that broke and filled a pit area of the pool housing an electric pump with water.

Workers had to, “fix the pipe, remove the motor, and let the whole area dry out,” Laforet said. As of about 2 p.m. Tuesday, the pump was being reinstalled.

Township officials announced via a Nixle alert that the pool would be opened during normal operating hours Wednesday.

“Now that school is done, and it’s one of the hottest days of the year so far, I’m sure everyone wanted to be in the pool,” Laforet said. “But, [pool officials and workers] did a fine job of getting this done, and getting the pool back up and running as quickly as possible.”

In the Nixle alert, township officials also reminded residents to take extra care during the next few days, which are forecasted to have temps in the 80s and 90s.
