Salem Oak Seedling Planted To Honor 50-Year Mahwah Environmentalist

MAHWAH, NJ — A Salem Oak Tree seedling was planted at Continental Soldiers Park to recognize the efforts of Carol Phiefer, who recently retired after more than 50 years of service to Mahwah on the Environmental Commission and previous Shade Tree Commission.
The tree seedling was grown from an acorn collected under the branches of the mighty Salem White Oak, which was over 500 years old when it toppled in 2019, Environmental Commission Chair Richard Wolf said.
"It is a fitting tribute to Carol, and we hope this seedling mirrors the 100-foot original oak it came from and contributes to enjoyment at the park for many years," Wolf said.

Gaining a reputation for her commitment to the environment, Phiefer helped identify possible locations for tree plantings under the Environmental Commission's Community Forestry Management Plan, which included the planting of 25 trees each year over the next five years.
Prepared in 2021, the plan identified locations throughout the township to "maintain its bucolic nature and natural simplicity," Wolf said. In the spring, trees were planted on Bellgrove Drive to replace diseased pear trees, and an additional 10 trees are planned for the fall near Winter's Pond and at Continental Soldiers Park.

Phiefer volunteered her time and efforts at many events, and her knowledge of trees provided benefit to the commission, Wolf said. She will continue to remain active in the Sustainable Mahwah group.
Her tree-planting commitment, the commission said, contributed to the township's recognition as "Bergen's Parkland."
"Trees are a vital part of Mahwah's community and we are committed to maintaining all the benefits they can provide," Wolf said.
