Sculpture Exhibition by Jay Wholley Opens at Ramapo College Feb. 25

The exhibition features a number of large sculptures influenced by the works of Piero della Francesca and Leonardo da Vinci.

The “Piero/Leonardo Project: Recent Work by Jay Wholley” opens in the Kresge Gallery at Ramapo College of New Jersey on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. highlighted with a talk by artist Mimi Weinberg at 6 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

The exhibition, which continues through April 17, features a number of large sculptures influenced by the works of Piero della Francesca and Leonardo da Vinci and created by Wholley, a long-time professor of art at Ramapo College.

Wholley received his B.A. from Dartmouth College and his MFA from the University of Colorado. His work has been featured in one-person shows at O.K. Harris Gallery in NYC, The Hill Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan and at the Payton-Wright Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He also had several university exhibitions at Rutgers, SUNY Binghamton, University of Minnesota and Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

His work has been exhibited in the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum in New York, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Trenton Museum, and the Aspen Museum of Art, among others. Several of his sculptures were recently shown at one of Paris’s premier art venues, the Grand Palais. His work has been reviewed and reported about in major publications including Arts Magazine and the New York Times.

Professor Wholley is a founding member of the Ramapo College faculty and has served as an early Chair of the Faculty Assembly. He has been Chair of the Visual Arts at various times for more than twenty years. He has taught at Ramapo College for 41 years.

A catalog for the exhibition will be available at a catalog release party on Thursday, April 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Kresge Gallery, located in the Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts.

Kresge Gallery hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m. This program is supported in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
