Student Representatives Appointed, Welcomed To School Board In Mahwah

At the school board meeting last week, the two new Mahwah High School student representatives were welcomed and thanked for their time.

MAHWAH, NJ — A special "guest" appeared on the Mahwah Board of Education panel at the regular meeting last week.

Mahwah High School's Student Government Executive Board President Ryan Stanford was welcomed as one of two 2022-23 high school student representatives to the board.

Stanford will be alternating meeting attendance with another student, said Superintendent Michael DeTuro, who welcomed and thanked them for "carving out time" in their busy schedules to be there.

"This is a great opportunity to share, with the public, events that are happening in high school and possibly the district," DeTuro said. "I love when we get a chance to talk to our high school students, especially the upperclassmen about their experiences."

On Jan. 18, Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law Assembly Bill No. 3392 requiring that school boards that include grades 9 through 12 appoint a student representative, who will provide reports at meetings about school-sponsored activities, and discuss student topics and concerns.
