Army Corps To Replenish Beaches From Belmar To Manasquan

Replenishment to begin later this month and be completed over the winter, corps say.

Beaches from Belmar to Manasquan eroded from Superstorm Sandy are targeted in a $25 million beach replenishment project, slated to begin later this month.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in July let a $25.3 million contract to replenish 1.5 million cubic yards of sand from the beaches in Belmar, Spring Lake, Sea Girt and Manasquan. Work will begin later this month or in early September and completed over the winter, the corps said.

"We hope that in addition to providing beach erosion control and storm risk reduction that this work also helps the region heal by restoring an important and central element to these coastal communities," New York District Commander Col. Paul E. Owen said in a release.

The contract is the second of to restore the coastline from Sea Bright to Manasquan with an estimated 8 million cubic yards of sand. The previously constructed beach erosion control and storm risk reduction project was constructed in the 1990s and completed in 2001 in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the corps said.
