Bamboo Ban Ordinance Approved By Belmar Council

The ordinance calls for either the confining or removal of invasive plants on residential property and the banning of any new planting.

BELMAR, NJ – The Belmar borough council recently approved an ordinance that bans the planting of bamboo and other invasive species of plants.

The borough originally introduced this ordinance at the council’s June 15 council meeting.

Running bamboo has horizontal roots that can extend up to 20 feet and take over existing plants in the area.

The other invasive species of plants banned by the ordinance include:

  • Ragweed
  • Poison ivy
  • Poison oak
  • Tree of heaven
  • Garlic mustard
  • Japanese knotwood
  • Mile-a-minute
  • Multiflora rose
  • Kudza
  • Porcelain berry

Residents found to have these invasive plant species on their property must either confine or remove it or face a $2,000 fine.
