Woman, 37, Hit, Killed On Route 70 In Manchester

MANCHESTER, NJ — A Manchester Township woman was hit and killed Wednesday night while she was standing in the road on Route 70, police said.

Catherine L. Camargo, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene, Manchester Capt. Albert Vega said.

The incident was reported at 10:41 p.m. Wednesday just west of Green Acres Road, Vega said.

Adam J. Lilley, 48, was driving west on Route 70 in a blue 2016 Hyundai Accent when he hit Camargo, who was standing in the westbound lane, Vega said. He immediately pulled over and called 911, Vega said.

Camargo was pronounced dead upon the arrival of first responders; Lilley reported no injuries on scene, Vega said.

Vega said the area of Route 70 where the incident happened is not well-lit. The Hyundai had its headlights on and "appeared to be in satisfactory operating condition," he said.

Assisting at the scene were EMTs from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Medical Services, paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, firefighters from the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company and members of the New Jersey Department of Transportation Diversion Team. Additionally, detectives from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigations Unit, a representative from the Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office and the New Jersey State Police assisted in the investigation.

Patrolmen Michael O’Hara and Keith Douglas of the Manchester Traffic Safety Unit are investigating.
