Woman Lounging On Couch Injured As SUV Slams Into Manchester Home

MANCHESTER, NJ — A woman lying on her couch was injured when an SUV smashed through the wall of her home in Manchester, police said.

Rosemarie Sherman, 66, was injured in the crash that happened shortly before 4 p.m. Friday at her home in the Silverwoods community, Manchester Capt. Albert Vega said.

Sherman was lying on her couch when a 2011 Toyota Highlander driven by Steven Makowsky, 63, broke through the wall of her house, Vega said. Makowsky was trying to park in a parking space and accidentally accelerated, hitting a tree before hitting the home, he said.

Makowsky and his passenger, Joan Thompson, 67, both of Manchester, had to be extricated from the Toyota but neither reported injuries at the time, Vega said.

Sherman, who was rescued from the home by first responders, was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.

Emergency medical technicians from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, along with the Manchester Township Volunteer Fire Department, Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Department, Priced Rite Towing and the Manchester Township building inspector, responded.

Patrolman Brendan Brush is investigating. Vega said the preliminary investigation indicated improper parking and pedal misapplication appear to be the primary contributing factors.
