Armed Carjacking In Maplewood; Police Increase Presence In Area

A driver left their car running while making a delivery. When they returned, a man was waiting with a gun, Maplewood police said.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — An armed carjacking took place in Maplewood last weekend, authorities say.

According to the Maplewood Police Department, officers responded to the area of Elmwood Avenue near Meadowbrook Road around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday after getting a report about a robbery.

Police released the following details about the ensuing investigation:

“After an on-scene investigation, it was determined that a driver of a 2022 Chevrolet Equinox left their vehicle running while making a delivery to a residence. When the driver returned to their vehicle, they were met by a male dressed in all-black, pointing a handgun. The [man] then entered into the vehicle and fled the scene.”

Police said the driver wasn’t injured. The vehicle was later recovered in Newark, authorities added.

Maplewood police said that detectives continue to investigate the carjacking. There will be a higher police presence in the area, authorities said.
