Oysterfest In Maplewood Honors Dad Who Died Young, Raises Cancer Funds

Bob Miller, a Maplewood resident and dad of 4 girls, died of skin cancer. The annual Oysterfest raises money for research.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — An upcoming oysterfest in Maplewood next month will raise money for melanoma research and honor a former resident who passed away in 2014 at age 48.

The Robert J. Miller Oysterfest honors the life of architect Bob Miller III, who lived with his wife and four daughters in "the heart of town" in Maplewood.

"A key focus of his practice was renovating the historic homes of Maplewood and surrounding areas," the festival organizers noted.

Melanoma, according to the Mayo Clinic, is the most serious type of skin cancer. It "develops in the cells (melanocytes) that produce melanin — the pigment that gives your skin its color. Melanoma can also form in your eyes and, rarely, inside your body, such as in your nose or throat."
