NJ-28 Primary Election Results: Tucker, Onyema Win Democrat Race, AP Says (UPDATED)
The district includes the municipalities of Hillside, Irvington, Maplewood, Newark and South Orange.

NEW JERSEY — A statehouse race in New Jersey’s 28th District reached it first major fork in the road on Tuesday when voters went to the polls for the 2025 primary election.
The 28th district includes the towns of Irvington, Maplewood, Newark and South Orange in Essex County. It also includes Hillside in Union County.

Two Democrats secured endorsements from the Essex County Democratic Committee: incumbent assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker and challenger Chigozie Onyema. Meanwhile, another incumbent assemblywoman – Garnet Hall – ran on a slate with governor candidate Steve Fulop.

No Republicans filed to run in the 28th District in this year's primary election.
The winners of the primary will advance to the general election on Nov. 4, which will also include any third-party or independent candidates.
The Associated Press has called the Democratic race for Cleopatra Tucker and Chigozie Onyema. Here are the uncertified results, according to the AP (via NJ Spotlight News):
DEMOCRATS (vote for two, 74% of votes counted)
- Garnet Hall – 8,115 votes (24.2%)
- Chigozie Onyema – 12,349 votes (36.8%)
- Cleopatra Tucker – 13,070 votes (39%)
