South Orange House Tour Scheduled for May 21

Four centuries of South Orange history in one afternoon

Did you miss the Annual (oops, it was May 1)? Not interested in getting caught up in The Rapture?

Then check out the South Orange Historical and Preservation Society (SOHPS) biennial house tour on May 21, 11 a.m to 4 p.m. It's an opportunity to look into our local past, four centuries of it, by touring historic homes.

In keeping with tradition, the identity and location of most homes are kept under wraps until the day of the tour. However, the 2011 “Gems of South Orange” House Tour will include houses from the 18th century to the 21st century, from the valley to the heights of First Mountain. The Tour will begin at the historic South Orange-Vailsburg Methodist Church.

What Historical Society board members call the “Queen of the show” has roots to 1744, making this home older than the United States.  It’s a gracious and sizeable edifice, set on a rise, overlooking one of South Orange’s stunning vistas.  More facts about this pre-Revolutionary house will be released soon. (Hint:  It is known as the Squire/Redmond house, and close readers may recall that a member of the family or staff.)

Other homes on display on the “Gems” tour include an unusual authentic Art Moderne jewel, a turreted Victorian with a stable, and a mountaintop Grand Tudor.
