Student Assaulted In South Orange-Maplewood School District: Police

A youth (or youths) from a different school were allegedly behind the assault at Columbia High School, authorities said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A student in the South Orange-Maplewood district was recently assaulted at Columbia High School, authorities announced Wednesday.

Maplewood police responded to the high school on Tuesday after getting a report about an assault. Here’s what investigators found, authorities said:

“After an on-scene investigation, it was determined that a Columbia High School student was assaulted by student(s) of a different local high school. The student was treated and transported with their parent to an area hospital by South Essex Fire Department.”

There was no direct threat to the school or any other students during the encounter, police said.

The assaulted student has since been released from the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.

Columbia High School is part of the South Orange-Maplewood district, which includes students from both towns.

The Maplewood Police Youth Aid Bureau is working with school administrators as part of an ongoing investigation. Students, staff and residents should expect to see extra police presence near the high school, authorities said.
