6 Years For South Amboy Man Who Hit Woman With Car, Then Fled

He hit a 56-year-old mother of four who was jogging in 2024 and then fled the scene, said police. She later died.

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ — The 21-year-old South Amboy man who hit a woman while she was jogging in 2024, and then fled the scene, was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison.

Mark Carey, Jr. pleaded guilty in April to one count of knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of another, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said previously.

Prosecutors say he hit Sutton, 56, with his 1999 Ford Explorer on Rt. 35 in Brick at 9 a.m. Jan. 13, 2024, a Saturday, and then fled.

Carey was 19 at the time. Sutton was jogging in the shoulder of the highway. She was taken to Ocean University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. She was the married mother of four children at the time of her death, according to her obituary.

Brick Police identified Carey as the driver of the car, which was registered to him, and he was arrested the next day at his parents' home in South Amboy.
