Affordable Housing Units Available in Aberdeen

Applications must be submitted by May 31

Aberdeen Township announced they will be accepting applications for affordable housing units on Route 34 near the border of Marlboro.

The eight units are part of The Villages at Aberdeen, a development that is currently being built by C&M Associates, explained Maxine Rescorl, the municipal housing liaison for the township. Four of the units are expected to be ready for occupancy by July 1. The remaining four are expected to be finished by the end of the year.

The area was zoned for inclusionary housing when C&M applied to develop the land in 2010 to help the township meet COAH regulations, Rescorl said. A total of 115 units will be built there.

In order to rent one of these affordable housing units, those interested must fill out an application. Applications are available at the Municipal Housing Liaison Office at the Aberdeen Township Municipal Building between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Applications are also available at the Monmouth County Library at 125 Symmes Drive in Manalapan, at the Ocean County Library at 101 Washington Street in Toms River and at the Mercer County Library at 2751 Brunswick Pike in Lawrenceville.

Applications must be submitted to the Township of Aberdeen, Attn: Maxine Rescorl, MHL no later than May 31, 2012. No late applications will be accepted, Rescorl said.

After an application is reviewed and certified, households will be matched to affordable housing units through a lottery system, Rescorl said. Successful applicants must demonstrate that they can pay a security deposit and first month's rent. They must also agree to maintain the unit as the family's primary residence.

C&M is also building a development on County Road called The Bluffs at Aberdeen. Thirty-seven of the 115 units will be available for affordable housing, Rescorl said. That project is still in the early stages of construction.
