Farmers Market Plants Roots in Matawan

After several turnovers, the newest business at New Brunswick Avenue and Main Street promises to serve fresh produce and drinks to locals.

The property at the corner of New Brunswick Avenue and Main Street in Matawan played host to one business after another in the last year.

From Philly Cheesesteak Factory to Matawan Café to Chopped Salad Shoppe, the place eventually sat vacant for several months until John Kim, a South Brunswick resident, decided to make roots in the Matawan community by opening Farmer's Market.

“I want to be part of the local community. If they drive ten or more minutes to come here I am glad but I am here more for the community’s ease and convenience,” Kim said, adding that he sees his shop as a “Quick Chek” for fruits and veggies.

Farmer’s Market opened in May and was fully stocked and running by mid-June, according to Kim. He offers fresh fruits and vegetables that can be purchased individually or by the case, as well as some organic items. He also sells cases of water and gallons of milk for the convenience of the customer, he said.

“This is not a big supermarket but a small neighborhood produce store,” Kim said.
