PERTH AMBOY, NJ - A beloved Middlesex County bakery will be closing its doors for good this weekend, its ownership announced last month.

Sipos’ Bakery, located at 365 Smith St., will be closing June 4, according to a May 25 Facebook post from the business.

“We are very thankful to all of our loyal customers for the continuous patronage and support over the decades,” the bakery wrote. “We have built wonderful relationships with all of you, both near and far, and we are sad to say goodbye.”

Sipos’ opened “nearly a half-of-century ago” serving the immigrant population of Perth Amboy, spanning Hungarian, Polish, and other European nationalities.

Though its original owner, George Sipos, sold the bakery to two bakers outside of his family, Sipos continues to offer traditional dishes like Hungarian Beigli, Babka, Bobalky and Hungarian Kifli, according to the bakery website. As the population of Perth Amboy broadened to include Spanish-speaking families over the decades, the bakery too has expanded its menu with Quesitos, Pan Tortuga, Tres Leches and Mexican Conchas.

“Whether you were a daily customer, traveled from out of town during the holiday seasons to get traditional Hungarian baked goods, or ordered from our website to be shipped across the country, we appreciate you,” the bakery added. “To the community of Perth Amboy and beyond, it has been great serving you. We will miss you.”
