CHESTER, NJ — Five people have filed petitions seeking election to the Chester School District Board of Education in 2023, according to the Morris County Clerk's office.

The deadline for candidates to file petitions to run for school board seats in the November general election in New Jersey was Monday, July 31.

The candidates for Chester's seats are:

  • Misrain Beltran - Building for Tomorrow
  • Carolyn "CiCi" Byszewski - Reading, Writing, Arithmetic
  • Erick Arostegui – Family Values, Education
  • Suzanne Dundon – Excellence in Education
  • Michael Barish - Support Chester Schools

Byszewski is the only incumbent seeking re-election. Current board members Rebekah Forlenza and Christopher Lowry, whose terms both expire this December, did not file for re-election.

The school board makes important community decisions such as hiring administrators and handling property tax money. Until 2012, all school boards held elections in April, when a state law was passed allowing districts to switch to the November general election.
