Marijuana Sales Ban Ordinance Introduced In Chester Twp

A public hearing on a potential ban will be held next month.

CHESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — An ordinance to ban the sale of marijuana in the town was introduced at last night's Chester Township council meeting.

If passed, the ordinance would prohibit the sale, testing, and growth of all marijuana within township limits, including medical marijuana. The sale of marijuana related paraphernalia, like bongs, would also be banned within township limits.

The proposed ordinance does not ban the possession or usage of marijuana. Possession and usage are still illegial recreationally in New Jersey, and all forms of marijuana remain illegial federally.

Chester Township is not the first town to ban marijuana sales ahead of a probable recreational legalization in New Jersey. Fellow Morris County town Chatham voted in April to ban recreational sales. Towns around the state, including Secaucus, Wyckoff, Bridgewater, Surf City, Middletown, Old Bridge, and Berkeley have either banned or are looking into banning pot sales in their towns.

A public hearing on the ordinance will take place in November, Councilman Mike Inganamort said. The next council meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 7, at 7 p.m.
