Three Narratives From Second Sherrill/Becchi Debate

A redux from Sunday night's affair was held by InsiderNJ on Tuesday.

NORTH JERSEY - A second meeting between U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill and GOP challenger for the 11th Congressional District Rosemary Becchi offered little new on Wednesday in comparison to Sunday night's first showdown.

The hour long event, hosted by InsiderNJ's Fred Snowflack, saw the candidates trading the same barbs and batting around the same talking points with a few new nuggets peppered within. Here are three narratives from the second debate.

Affordable Care Act

This was the primary difference from the first debate, a lot of discussion on the ACA and it possibly being repealed.

Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor, said that Becchi has no plan for healthcare if President Donald Trump successfully "sabotages" the ACA, or Obamacare.

Becchi, a tax attorney and lobbyist who worked with the Senate Finance Committee, said that Sherrill wants a government-run system that will destroy the healthcare system provided by employers.

The Debate Goes To Washington

Becchi repeatedly tried again to tie Sherrill to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi something she did in the first debate and has done repeatedly on social media.

For her part, Sherrill took aim at Becchi's "Washington Talking Points" and her allegiance to the agenda of Donald Trump.

Record Redux

When discussing their respective histories Sherrill again brought up Becchi's lobbyist past and brought up her lobbying for tax doctrine that hurt New Jersey taxpayers and for helping big corporations skirt environmental regulations. Sherrill also tied Becchi to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who Sherrill said Becchi has donated campaign money to.

Becchi said that Sherrill acted like a lobbyist for Nancy Pelosi in her first term and that a review of the voting record would show her siding with the speaker 99 percent of the time.

You can view the entire debate on YouTube.

Sherrill and Becchi are scheduled to trade views again today at noon, through the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, and tonight at 7 p.m. through the Jewish Federation of Greater Metrowest New Jersey.
