Your Mirrors Could Be Tipping Car Thieves Off: Morris Co. PD
Morris County police shared the simple thing that could be letting thieves know your car is unlocked.

MENDHAM, NJ — With luxury car thieves still targeting Morris County, one police department is warning residents about a small thing that lets thieves know your car is unlocked.
It's your car mirrors, Mendham Township police said. Newer model luxury cars, the types targeted by thieves, tend to fold in when the car is locked, police said.
"The groups are targeting the those vehicles with mirrors still out hoping that they are not only unlocked, but have the key fobs in them. Be diligent in locking your vehicles and make sure you call in any suspicious activity immediately!" police said.

Other Morris County police departments have issued warnings to residents about the rash of overnight car burglaries and thefts.
"There have been several types of these incidents in surrounding municipalities so please do not assume that these are isolated incidents which will go away soon. Keep your vehicles locked, remove any valuables, and do not leave any keys/key fobs in your vehicles," Hanover Police Chief Mark Roddy said.

In addition to looking at the mirrors, some car burglars are using higher-tech methods.
"Some find key fobs inside which allow them to start the vehicle and drive away with it. In addition, car thieves are using a phone app to locate vehicles with key fobs inside, making the theft of your car a quick and easy process," said County Sheriff James Gannon last year.
He shared tips to avoid burglaries:
- Lock your vehicle and remove the key fob.
- Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
- Protect your identify and accounts by removing purses, wallets or checkbooks from your vehicle.
- Contact your local Police Department to report any suspicious individuals or vehicles in your neighborhood.
