MIDDLETOWN, NJ — The new and improved tennis courts, and expanded pickleball courts, at Tindall Park will have their grand opening Friday, Sept. 5.

From 5-7 p.m. there will be a DJ at Tindall Park, giveaways, raffle prizes and food trucks for purchase. All Middletown residents, families and kids welcome.

The Township closed the courts last July, and the courts were closed for over a year so they could be resurfaced. This came after residents and Middletown North tennis players implored the town to improve the tennis courts.

Tindall Park is one the biggest parks in Middletown.

In the past year, the Township repaved all the tennis courts, and put new nets in, and turned four of the tennis courts into pickleball courts. So, there are now 12 tennis courts and six pickleball courts at Tindall Park.

The brand-new courts had a soft opening this summer, mostly so they could be used for practice by the high school tennis teams.

The basketball court was also resurfaced and new nets were put in. There is a new driveway and Tindall Park also has a new dog park that just opened in the past year.

"It's been a complete overhaul of Tindall Park," Mayor Tony Perry said previously.

Some trees around the tennis/pickleball courts were also removed, something else North tennis players had asked for. Tree roots were growing underneath the courts, causing cracks and uneven surfaces and making it dangerous to play. Overhanging trees were also blocking the sunlight, preventing the courts from drying quickly after rain. The old courts were mossy and slippery, players said.
