Rabid Skunk Gets Into Altercation With Dog In Middletown, Twp. Says

This happened Saturday in the area of Riverbrook Avenue, Harvey Avenue and Shelbern Drive in Lincroft:

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — A rabid skunk was found in the area of Riverbrook Avenue, Harvey Avenue and Shelbern Drive in Lincroft Saturday, announced Middletown Twp.

The skunk was acting "ill," said the Township, and got into a fight with someone's dog.

When Middletown Animal Control arrived on the scene they found the back half of the skunk’s body was paralyzed from the apparent altercation with the dog. The skunk was then taken to a vet to be humanely euthanized.

The skunk's body was sent to the state lab. Results came back Tuesday that the skunk was positive for rabies.

The officers did not see any bites or scratches on the dog, however the owner took the dog to the vet for a rabies booster just as a precaution. The dog was up to date on its rabies vaccines.

Middletown reminds not to interact with wildlife and if you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and avoid all contact. Call Animal Control at 732-615-2097 immediately or contact the Police Department at 732-615-2100 after hours and on weekends.

Make sure all dogs, cats and livestock are up to date on their rabies shot. Do not let your pets run free off leash, even in the woods, to ensure they do not come in contact with wildlife that may be rabid.
