First, the deer ran across Rt. 36, dodging cars, and then ran headfirst into the glass of a barbershop, where he became trapped inside.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — The owner of a Port Monmouth barbershop released these two videos that show when a deer became trapped inside his barbershop Monday morning.

This happened at Barber Culture Barbershop on Rt. 36 in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown. At 7:15 a.m. Monday, shop owner Rob Lawrence received a call from a woman at the bagel shop next door, notifying him that the front window of his business was smashed.

He gave her the code to get in the back door, but nothing could prepare her for what she found: A male deer, a buck, having just ran across Rt. 36 and dodging cars, ran through the front window and was now trapped inside the barbershop.

Lawrence, who lives in Hazlet, jumped in his car and ran over to the shop. He also called Middletown Police, who came to the store.

"He just ran through the front window," said Lawrence. "When we first walked in we didn't know if he was alive; he was just lying on the floor. But an officer walked over to him and I guess that startled him, because he suddenly leaped up and was trying to get out of the store."

The video from his store's security camera shows Middletown Police officers with brooms, trying to usher the deer to the front door. The buck eventually found the open front door and ran back outside.

Lawrence said he thinks the buck will survive.

"It was a little sad. It had blood on its face from when it smashed through the glass the first time, but it otherwise looked and seemed OK. I think it will survive."

October and November are rutting season in New Jersey, when deer mate. This leads to increased deer activity, especially during the early morning and twilight hours. There is also an increase in deer on the roads during those times.

Lawrence also provided this second video that shows the buck first running across Rt. 36, and narrowly escaped being hit, and then running through the front glass of his shop:
