Millburn Middle School Holds Thanksgiving Food Drive and Assembly

Each homeroom at MMS will create a food basket for a family in need. An international volunteer will speak at the assembly.

Millburn Middle School will hold its annual Thanksgiving assembly and food drive on Wednesday, with each homeroom creating a basket of food containing many meals for a family in need.

The food baskets will be donated to the Newark Little Flower Church, and will be accepted by a former school custodian. The annual food drive has become a Millburn Middle School tradition.

Sharon Zieman, a Heifer International volunteer representative who just returned from visiting Heifer projects in Honduras, will speak to the students at the Thanksgiving assembly. Zieman will share first-hand experiences of her trip and will show a video to illustrate her presentation.

The Millburn Middle School Peer Leader Outreach Program peer leaders, who coordinate the Thanksgiving drive, have supported Heifer international with fundraising efforts over the years. The peer leader program even donated $5,000 to support Heifer’s fundraising efforts at last year’s Thanksgiving assembly.

In October, some of the peer leaders and their advisor, teacher Maria Deraville, attended the Heifer International 70th anniversary celebration in Westfield, where they were invited to give a PowerPoint presentation about the Millburn Middle School peer leaders charitable efforts.
