Millburn Zoning Board Denies Stop & Shop Application

The decision regarding the controversial Millburn Avenue proposal could still be appealed before a state court.

Millburn zoning officials struck down an application for a variance that could have paved the way for a Stop & Shop supermarket some say would have caused traffic congestion in the township.

The board’s vote Monday was unanimous, The Alternative Press reported.

The proposed supermarket plan, the bulk of which is located in Springfield, contained a 20-foot piece of land entering the property that runs through Millburn Avenue in Millburn.

Stop & Shop officials have been petitioning land use boards in both Millburn and Springfield for 15 years, according to TAP.

Board member Mary McNett said that the deliberations were “quite serious” and that the board made its decision with a “duty toward municipal land use law and the history of the application,” the website wrote.
