MILLBURN, NJ — Don’t fall for the scam, Millburn town officials say.

On Monday, the township issued an alert about a recent uptick in scam and phishing emails. The kicker? On first glance, they appear to be coming from municipal employees.

“These fraudulent messages may look convincing and often include requests for personal or financial information and/or suspicious links or attachments,” Millburn town administrators said.

Any official staff email with the township ends in @millburntwp.org, administrators said.

Millburn officials gave the following advice for local residents who get a “suspicious” message:

  • Do Not click any links or download attachments from unknown senders
  • Verify the sender by contacting the township directly via phone (973) 564-7000 or official email
  • Report the fraudulent message to the township and delete the email once reported

“If you believe you have received a scam message from someone claiming to be a township employee, please reach out and let us know,” the town’s advisory continued. “We take these reports seriously and will investigate them promptly.”

Millburn administrators offered the following suggestions for “how to spot a scam email”:

  • Email comes from an address that may look legitimate but will have subtle differences (all official Township emails end in @millburntwp.org)
  • Message contains suspicious links or attachments
  • Misspellings, poor grammar, or unusual formatting
  • Message contains urgent or threatening language (e.g.- Your account will be suspended!)
  • Contains unexpected requests for personal or financial information
  • The sign-off is atypical or contains incorrect information (e.g.- Officer of Public Information instead of Public Information Officer)
