Short Hills Cook Book Author to Speak at Kings Cooking Studio

Short Hills native Laura Zinn Fromm will read from her new cook book memoir at the Kings Short Hills Cooking Studio on January 14.

Short Hills native, Laura Zinn Fromm, has published a combined cook book and memoir entitled SWEET SURVIVAL: Tales of Cooking & Coping.

Fromm will discuss and read from her new book on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Kings Short Hills Cooking Studio.

SWEET SURVIVAL is a collection of essays that is two parts memoir, one part cookbook. A former award-winning journalist and self-described sugar addict, Fromm is both funny and frank in this moving account of trying to find comfort in a family fraught with mental illness. The book was published in September 2014 by Greenpoint Press.

Fromm’s essays are warm and generous, as are her recipes and cooking advice. Readers will find everything, from baking for a Nobel Prize winner to courting a kidnapper; mastering a mousse soufflé to roasting a chicken in milk.

Fromm writes about her life with a tenderness and tenacity, and about food with a devotion and sensuality that will inspire even the most kitchen-phobic readers to bolt for their sauté pans.

What Writers Are Saying About “SWEET SURVIVAL: Tales of Cooking & Coping”

“Reading SWEET SURVIVAL is like relaxing in the warm kitchen of a favorite neighbor on a snowy afternoon when there’s no place you’d rather be, and nothing you’d rather be doing, than sharing stories as she magically turns favorite recipes into awesome comfort food. The writing is so compelling that it draws you in with a distinct voice that carries throughout the book. The memoir sections are mesmerizing. Move over Nora Ephron and Lena Dunham: there’s a new neighbor in town and her name is Laura Zinn Fromm!”

— Arthur T. Vanderbilt, author of Fortune’s Children: The Fall of the House of Vanderbilt”

“SWEET SURVIVAL is one of those books, like Laurie Colwin’s Home Cooking, destined to make the rounds years after publication, passed down from woman to woman, recommended by friends and Wednesday night book club. The stories, about relationships and cooking, are the real stuff of life. It’s like sitting in your kitchen with your best friend, talking about life, the loves, births, deaths, longings, failures and joys-- and the recipes that go with them. Beautiful, delicious fare. “
