Millburn Driver Issued Summonses for Hitting Bicyclist

Millburn police have issued a summons to a 37-year-old Millburn man as a result of last week’s Millburn Avenue hit-and-run accident involving an SUV and bicyclist.

The driver, Marc Lombardy, was issued summonses for careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident, Millburn police said.

According to police, the Maplewood bicyclist, Johnathon Cain, 30, was struck Wednesday around 10 a.m. as Lombardy made a right-hand turn onto Wyoming Avenue from Millburn Avenue.

Cain told police, he managed to jump off his bicycle after it was hit, avoiding any injuries. Millburn’s First Aid Squad responded to the accident and released Cain after a brief examination. 

A police officer on the scene said he was given the license plate number of the SUV from a witness and traced the vehicle back to Lesile Lombardy, of Millburn.

Police went to the home, left voice messages and a note on the front door.

Lombardy showed up at the Millburn Police Station at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon.

He told police he was making a right turn at a green light onto Wyoming Avenue and heard a loud thump.

According to Lombardy, he stopped after the accident and Cain cursed and screamed, telling Lombardy to leave. Lombardy told police Cain didn't seem hurt so he drove away to avoid confrontation.

Cain told police, "The guy in the SUV said he had the right of way. I said you just hit me dude, I'm calling the cops and he took off."

Police discovered scratch marks on the front passenger side of the SUV as well as the passenger door consistent with marks from the handle bars of Cain bicycle, police said.
