Legendary British Rocker Dave Mason Plays Outpost on Friday

Dave Mason, the legendary British singer and guitarist, will bring his own brand of rock to Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair on Friday night.

Mason has played and recorded with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, and The Rolling Stones. His best known song—“Feelin’ Alright,” recorded by his rock group Traffic in 1968—has been covered by dozens of artists.

In addition, Mason's 1977 solo hit "We Just Disagree" has become a popular staple on oldies and adult contemporary radio playlists.

The Friday evening event is just one of many put on by Outpost, a nonprofit outreach organization dedicated to building community through music, community service, and cultural programs.

Since its inception in 1987, Outpost has presented more than 350 concerts by internationally known artists—Judy Collins, Roger McGuinn, Richie Havens, J.D. Souther, Dar Williams, and others—and more than 50,000 people have attended.

Besides promoting and staffing concerts, Outpost volunteers have donated more than 35,000 hours of their time to programs affiliated with Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots, Human Needs Food Pantry of Montclair, Community Food Bank of N.J., and Dress for Success. In addition, the soup kitchen at Christ Episcopal Church in East Orange is run by Outpost volunteers and feeds some 75 people twice a month.

"In addition to hosting great performances, the Outpost encourages community service and plans lots of cultural and social events for anyone interested," said long-time volunteer Mary McGee. "It's an amazing group of people who make up the 100 or so volunteers making it all work together.

"Strangely, I meet people in Montclair all the time who have never heard of the Outpost in the Burbs, even though it's been part of the community since 1987," she said. "I think many people think we are affliated with a church but we're not."
