Montclair Civil Rights Activist Will Be Black History Month Speaker At Mt. Zion Church
James Harris is the first VP of Montclair NAACP and will speak at Mt. Zion Church on Feb. 26.

From Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church: James Harris, long-time civil rights activist and advocate for educational access will be the Black History Month Guest Speaker at Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Sunday, Feb. 26 beginning at 10:40 a.m. at 27 Monroe Place, Montclair. Rev. Elizabeth J. Campbell is pastor.
Harris, a resident of Montclair, is the first vice-president of the Montclair NAACP. He is a former president of both the Montclair chapter and the New Jersey State NAACP. He retired from a 42-year career at Montclair State University, which included 21 years as associate dean of students and 6 years as university ombudsman.
His numerous awards for social policy work and leadership in education, include Community Service Awards as President of the Montclair NAACP; and recognition from the New Jersey Association of Black Educators, New Jersey Black United Fund, and the New Jersey Alliance of Black Educators. He earned his B.A. in Social Studies with a New Jersey Secondary School Certification from Montclair State College (now Montclair State University). He holds master’s degrees in Personnel Service and in Public Administration.
