Montclair Restaurants Cited for Health Code Violations in 2012

Find out if your favorite restaurant was among those that were cited for health code violations last year.

Fifteen restaurants in Montclair were cited for health code violations last year by local inspectors, according to township records.

Montclair Heath and Human Services conduct inspections on more than 300 eateries in town each year, which includes restaurants, food stores, mobile vendors, schools and more.

Township inspectors assess eateries in more than 50 areas, such as the presence of rodents and insects, how food is stored, temperature control and ventilation.

Montclair’s Senior Registered Environmental Health Specialist Keith Costello said inspectors have recently noted hand washing is commonly overlooked in many eateries in town.

“Education on hand washing is needed because it is not being done as ... it should be,” said Costello.

Aroma Palace, an Indian restaurant formally located at 379 Bloomfield Ave., was the only eatery in Montclair to be given an unsatisfactory rating in 2012. Costello said the restaurant was a repeat offender and was shut down multiple times during its two-year stay in Montclair.

Inspectors rate eateries as “satisfactory,” “conditionally satisfactory,” “conditionally satisfactory on re-inspection,” and “unsatisfactory” depending on the number and severity of their violations.

A satisfactory rating means the eatery is operating in compliance with the state’s health codes.

A conditionally satisfactory rating means the establishment received one or more health code violations at the time of the inspection which need to be corrected.

An unsatisfactory rating is for “egregious” violations, said Costello, such as severe rodent infestations. The establishment must be closed until those violations are corrected and another inspection is conducted.

A placard indicating an eatery’s rating is required to be placed somewhere that can be visibly seen by patrons.

The following restaurants were cited as conditionally satisfactory for health code violations in 2012 by the Montclair Health and Human Services Department.

These restaurants were subsequently re-inspected and received a satisfactory rating. The full township reports can be found in the photo gallery of this article.

2013 Ratings

As a new round of health code inspections begin this year, Leone’s Italian Restaurant was the only eatery to be cited thus far with an unsatisfactory rating and closed down temporarily due to a severe mouse infestation.

Inspectors found mouse droppings on a food preparation table in the kitchen on the morning of Jan. 10 and many mouse traps were witnesses throughout the Italian restaurant, located at 19 S. Park St. There was no evidence of any food contamination, according to the report.

The restaurant was cited for 20 violations in all, including improperly labeling dates on food and unclean kitchen surfaces.

The restaurant was immediately shut down. Costello said the owner fixed the problem immediately. Once the problems were found at Leone’s, said Costello, the owner “was very on top of it. ... He had a whole crew come in to wash, rinse and sanitize the entire place.”

Upon another inspection later that day, the restaurant was permitted to reopen. While Leone’s remains open, it's rating remains conditionally satisfactory until another inspection is done by local health inspectors.

The following eateries in Montclair currently have a conditionally satisfactory rating in 2013 as re-inspections have yet to be done.
