My Block: Which Block Is The Best In Montclair?

Residents talk about why their block, High Street, is the best block in Montclair.

Just a few weeks ago, Patch started a segment titled "My Block." The goal is to find out why you believe your block is the best in Montclair. In our inaugural segment, we heard about Inwood Avenue. Then came Midland Avenue. Last week we heard about Summit Avenue. And this week we are hearing about ... drum roll, er, guitar strum, please ... High Street, with Alma Schneider, founder of Parents Who Rock and Take Back the Kitchen, and other proud residents telling us what makes their street the best street to live on in Montclair.

If you only had two words to sum up High Street—between Amelia Street and Orange Road—they'd probably be cool and diverse. The street not only boasts a wide range of architectural styles but also a wide range of family types. Indeed, all sorts of cultures and ethnicities are proudly represented on this lovely block, nicely shaded by giant trees.

Besides the community atmosphere, residents love being so close to a variety of amenities. Just across the street is the Nishane School, the swimming pool, the newly paved tennis courts, and baseball and football fields. "It's like we have our own private little country club right outside our door," Schneider says.

In addition, residents get together once a month to share food and cocktails. They enjoy a close proximity to daycare and community centers. And residents point out that the street is located on the route of Montclair's annual African-American Parade.

On a street so perfectly located, houses don't stay on the market for long. Currently there's a six-bedroom house at 108 High Street that's on the market for $559,000. Built in 1925, the property is set on park-like grounds.

As Schneider says in the video. She defies you to present a block that's any better than High Street. The heat is definitely on!
