Garden State Doo-Wop Groups to Be Discussed at Library

New Jersey produced more than its share of great Doo-wop groups. 

From the Four Seasons to the Duprees, Monotones, Rivieras and Shirelles, you’ll hear stories about the Doo-wop scene in the Garden State during the Montville Township Public Library's special presentation on Oct. 21 at 2 p.m.

There will be a multimedia presentation on 1950’s Doo-wop music by internationally-acclaimed Doo-wop music historians Charlie and Pam Horner, who were dubbed the “foremost authorities on early rhythm and blues and vocal group music” by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Hear how the Duprees got their name and listen to a rare tape they made before they recorded “You Belong to Me.” Follow the real story of “Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons” when they were known as the “Four Lovers.” Learn how a toothpaste commercial and an errant baseball led to the Monotones writing “The Book of Love.” Find out which group’s career was cut short by a tragic fire and hear many more stories about street corner harmony in New Jersey.

There will be stories and photos from the Classic Urban Harmony Archives of records, photographs, sheet music and memorabilia and plenty of music clips for you to sing along to.

The event will be held in the Pio Costa Auditorium at the Montville Township Public Library. Registration is suggested and can be completed by calling 973-402-0900 x 227.
